Language Arts

Reading-   Students are given the opportunity to read in many              different ways and in many different settings.

Small Group Instruction- The students are grouped according to instructional level most of the time, but occasionally we have book clubs. They can choose the book group they want to be a part of during these special sessions each trimester.

Whole Group Instruction- All of the students are taught in a whole group setting. We read aloud many picture books and discuss the title, the author, the problem, the solution, the setting, and what the author is wanting us to know. We then retell the story in one or two different ways to reinforce comprehension skills. We also use Scholastic News in a group setting. We enjoy talking about each article, and learning about the happenings in the world.

Self-Selected Reading- the students quietly read books at their own reading level for at least 30 minutes daily.

Buddy Reading- the students use whisper voices to read with a buddy. I pair them up according to reading level at first, and then I let them choose whom they'd like to read with. It gives students a chance to read orally in a non-threatening situation with a friend. Sometimes they read the same book with their buddy and alternate pages. Other times they read from their own book and share their enthusiasm of the story they're reading.

Read Aloud- I read daily from a chapter book. We keep a chapter book going all year just for the pure enjoyment of reading!

 Writing-

Students are given the opportunity to write in many different subject areas throughout the day. Our main focus on writing is during Writing Workshop however. We have mini lessons each day that teach and reinforce the 2/3 grade skills. I also model daily. Sometimes we do a group write, but most of the time the students are on their own in their draft book. They may write about any topic that interests them. We use the 4 Square writing plan. We also talk continually about the 6 Traits plus 1 and the writing process. Kids' Poems by Regie Routman is used to teach poetry writing. It is an awesome resource!

 Word Study-

We use Phonics Month by Month by Hall and Cunningham to teach about how words work. We use chart paper to brainstorm words in certain spelling patterns, and then I have the students write sentences using these words in their word study notebook. Our district spelling program is Spell Well. I give the entire list to the students at the beginning of the year, and then for two trimesters we have weekly spelling tests with randomly chosen words (Data Not Guesswork) which they graph. The third trimester I go back to a weekly list of the most commonly misspelled words.
