In 2nd grade we use the Bridges Math Program from the Math Learning Center. "Bridges is conceptually oriented and activity-based. It facilitates the development of children's mathematical thinking and reasoning abilities by providing age-appropriate problems and investigations in such areas as number, geometry, probability/statistics, data analysis, patterning, and measurement."

  This year we are piloting the 3rd GRADE BRIDGES Program from the Math Learning Center. This program, though it stands alone, builds on the 2nd Grade Bridges program. I am continually learning new mathematical strategies in all of the strands. I'm also learning to look at a math problem from many different angles. Boy, have I grown as a mathematician! This program helps students to:
* Develop mathematical understandings,
* Construct mathematical relationships,
* Participate in mathematical discussions, and
* Solve problems.

The seven strands of mathematics: number sense/fractions, number sense/computation, number sense/money, geometric sense, algebraic sense, measurement, and probability/statistics, are explored and investigated throughout the program. The complete curriculum is consistent with the
National Council of Teachers of Mathematics(NCTM) standards.

Fact Families

  We like children to memorize their basic facts in addition and subtraction (2nd grade), and multiplication and division (3rd grade) in families. For example: 6+4=10, 4+6=10, 10-4=6, 10-6=4. Students should work on these for about 15 minutes each night. We have a timed, five minute test on the fact families each week. There are 6 problems, chosen at random, on each test. Each child then graphs their score( Data Not Guesswork). They keep the graph of their progress for a trimester. We also graph our scores each week as a class.
