LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER

  Instructional Program

The mission of the library media program is to ensure that students and staff are effective users of information and ideas.

What skills do students need to become "effective users of ideas and information?"

In order to use information and ideas effectively, students need to be able to access, evaluate and use information from a variety of sources.

Will they learn these skills in the library?

YES! Information skills are taught in the library media center and in the classroom. The Big Six Skills™Approach to Information Problem-Solving is used to teach research/information literacy skills. Whenever possible, students are taught information skills that directly relate to their classroom assignments.

When do students come to the library media center?
All first through fifth grade classes have a 45 minute scheduled library class time each week. Kindergarten classes have a 30 minute scheduled class time each week.
What do students do during library class time?

During library class time, students LEARN ...

  • about wonderful books, a variety of genres, outstanding authors and illustrators, and
  • how to locate and use information from resources such as...

nonfiction books, encyclopedias, atlases, almanacs, the Internet, CD-ROM materials, magazines, dictionaries, maps, globes, and more!

BOOKS! BOOKS!! BOOKS!!!
